A yahrtzeit is an anniversary of a death of a loved one. We commemorate a yahrtzeit by lighting a small candle, called a yahrtzeit candle, which burns throughout the 24-hour day of the anniversary of death. The flame of the candle is a potent symbol of the flame of life that once burned brightly and illumined the lives of loved ones who mourn the loss.
Temple members are asked to provide the names and dates of death of deceased relatives for inclusion in the yahrtzeit list. Temple Hatikvah will annually notify members of the yahrtzeit date, and the name of the deceased will be announced from the bimah on the Shabbat prior to the anniversary of the passing of the loved one. You may also wish to request that other members of your (extended) family receive notice of a yahrtzeit. It is customary to give a donation to a synagogue fund in memory of a loved one at the time of a yahrtzeit. Temple members will receive a donation card with their reminder letters. Additionally, anyone may make a donation in memory of a loved one here:
When donating via PayPal, please indicate the name of your loved one and the specific fund you’d like to donate to (General Fund, Education Fund, Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund, Torah Fund, Library Fund, Congregation Fund). If you wish to create a permanent remembrance to a loved one, you may wish to have their name commemorated on our yarzheit memorial board in the sanctuary. A light next to the plaque will be lit every year of their yahrtzeit, which provides a certain comfort to those remaining. Names inscribed on these plaques are included in the congregation's annual Yizkor Book listing, and are read at the annual observance of the yahrtzeit of the deceased. Yahrtzeit Plaques:
- Effective Before July 1, 2011 - $200 - does not include an online memorial.
- Effective On or After July 1, 2011 - $250 - includes an optional online memorial for no additional fee.
Online Memorials:
- Plaque Owners - $100 for each set of up to four online memorials for departed loved-ones who have Yahrtzeit Plaques on our board (or on order).
- Other Yahrtzeits - For departed loved-ones who do not have a Plaque on our board (or on order), online memorials are $125 each, creditable towards a $250 plaque if purchased within one year.
